But misquoting and misattributing are two of the things we do well and there are so few things we do well otherwise.
I’d chide you for being cynical, Linda, but unfortunately, I agree with you. The term “blowback” comes to mind, first used by the CIA in 1952, I think. But it works on both national and personal levels, too. It’s very hard for humans to think beyond accomplishing short-term aims.
