Quote of the Day

“I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to mis-attribute this quote to Voltaire.”

–  Avram Grumer

(The original quote upon which this quip is based was actually written by Evelyn Beatrice Hall under the pseudonym S[tephen] G. Tallentyre in “The Friends of Voltaire” in 1906, as her own summary of her idol’s attitude.)

But misquoting and misattributing are two of the things we do well and there are so few things we do well otherwise.

    • I’d chide you for being cynical, Linda, but unfortunately, I agree with you. The term “blowback” comes to mind, first used by the CIA in 1952, I think. But it works on both national and personal levels, too. It’s very hard for humans to think beyond accomplishing short-term aims.

  2. Linda Sand, that is downright epigrammatic of you.
