Happy Thanksgiving

IMG_0720

My granddaughter.

While so many people do their best to make the world a more difficult place to live in, it helps to step back every now and then to remind ourselves what life is really about, and to appreciate that our place in it matters, whether we sense that or not. “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.” We are not left helpless as we look around ourselves. Live in your own little piece of the world as it needs to become, not as a contributor to the one that is.

  1. Well said!

  2. That’s my favorite quote! I don’t know how much of an impact I may ever have on this world. But even if I can’t change the world, living by those words, helps me to change my little corner of it!

Your granddaughter looks so adorable! Such a precious smile. I hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving.

    • I have another picture of her crying, and I’m told she’s no little weak-lunged whimperer. Doesn’t look like it, either. She has enough voice projection that my standing assumption is that she’ll be a stage vocalist. Her nickname is Ethel Merman, as in, “There’s no business like show business…” She may be shattering glass by age 5.

      • Love that quote, it has come to me at a useful time. Thank you, Doug! (Who’s the author? Sounds biblical.)

        • The author is the apostle Paul, and it sounds Biblical because it is: it’s Philippians 4:8. It’s widely considered to have been written while he was being held under house arrest in Rome, and was written to the believers in Philippi, but I consider it helpful in general. It is a good way to avoid the sense of overwhelmed, helpless hopelessness that the world tends to forge. There is good, and it is worth seeking out.

          • Today is Day 4 of being without heat. Lows have been 7 to 8 F. My landlord has not approved repairs until today, trying to save money by waiting until after the weekend rates ended. It has been hard to maintain my composure with blocks of ice for feet. (Supposedly it will be repaired today.)

There is still plenty for me to be thankful for, and I shall now redirect my ire and seek out the good things. After all, why should I be frozen stiff AND grumpy?

            Gratefully,
            the Icemaiden

      • Now, Now, Grandpa! My Grandfather would tell you that a set of pipes like that is a good sign of a healthy Young’un! 🙂

Although I must say, as a note of warning, I had a five year old little girl, when I was a dorm mom. She was a warm and happy young girl most of the time, but when she got upset and she started screaming? I am quite certain could bend metal!
